AirTran expects first annual loss since 1999 This article is premium content

20-Nov-08: AirTran Airways is expecting to report its first full-year loss since 1999 this year, due to high fuel prices earlier in the year and weaker demand since the Summer peak. In 1999, the carrier reported a USD99 million loss. CFO, Arne Haak, stated, “we've replaced high oil and a moderate economy with lower oil and an uncertain economy”.

Spring Airlines taps HSH Nordbank for USD20 million loan This article is premium content

18-Nov-08: Shanghai-based LCC, Spring Airlines, stated it has entered its first bank loan agreement, borrowing USD20 million from Germany’s HSH Nordbank. The funds will be used to acquire aircraft next year. Spring Airlines announced plans in May-08 to order 30 A320s, subject to regulatory approval, as part of plans to expand its fleet to 100 aircraft by 2015.

Royal Jordanian confident of full year profit This article is premium content

18-Nov-08: After weathering a period of intense fuel prices Royal Jordanian Airlines has reported an operating profit of USD33.9 million for the first nine months of 2008, even as its fuel costs almost doubled. The carrier suffered an overall net loss of USD2.8 million for the nine-month period, with much of the loss attributable to a USD24.0 million decline in the value of its fuel hedges as oil prices have plummeted.

18-Nov-08: NAV CANADA, the Canadian Air Navigation Service Provider, announced revenue for the 12 months ended 31-Aug-08 increased 1.9% year-on-year to CAD1,228 million. Operating expenses (before rate stabilisation) in the 12 months were CAD961 million, “comparable” to FY07.

Construction starts on terminal building for Tokyo Narita's 'reliever' airport

Ibaraki Airport, a new civil airport being developed at Hyakuri Military Base northeast of Tokyo, has commenced construction of its passenger terminal building. The USD26 million project, which will be handled by the Ibaraki Prefecture Development Public Corporation, is expected to be completed by Dec-09. The airport is aiming to serve as a secondary airport in the Tokyo Metropolitan area, which currently lacks lower cost alternatives to Narita and Haneda.

Wataniya Airways CEO, George Cooper, announced in early Nov-08 that the carrier has no plans to defer its launch of operations in Kuwait from its Jan-09 target, despite the ongoing global financial crisis. The premium-focused carrier’s CEO stated that while it may have been easier for the carrier to have launched services during a “less volatile” period, it is pushing ahead despite the present uncertainty. The carrier recently completed hiring of both pilots and cabin crew for its launch phase.

Kuwait International Airport’s (KIA) reports passenger numbers returned to positive territory in Oct-08, helped by a surge in travel during the Eid Al-Fitr holiday period. The airport reported passenger numbers surged 14% year-on-year in Oct-08 to 577,810.
