airberlin: Record number of passengers in 2011
Despite an economically challenging environment, airberlin, Germany's second-largest airline company, transported more passengers in 2011 than ever before. The number of passengers increased by 1.2 percent to reach 35.3 million. In 2010, a total of 34,889,564 passengers traveled on airberlin's flight route network. Fleet capacity utilization increased from 76.4 percent in 2010 to 78.2 percent in 2011 (+1.8 percentage points), whereas year-over-year capacity decreased by 1.1 percent.
In December 2011, airberlin welcomed a total of 2,019,585 passengers on board, i.e. 11.7 percent less than in the corresponding month of the previous year (12/2010: 2,285,974 passengers). At the same time, the company reduced capacity by 10.1 percent, in the context of the efficiency-increasing program "Shape & Size". In monthly comparison, fleet capacity utilization for December decreased from 76.0 percent to 74.7 percent (-1.3 percentage points).
