03-May-2012 First quarter optimism tempered with caution

Passenger traffic at Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) rose 2.6% for the first quarter of calendar year 2012 despite 2.2% fewer flights according to preliminary statistics released today by the airport's Division of Financial Planning & Analysis.

A total of 7,384,535 total passengers arrived or departed DTW as of March 31 on 102,623 aircraft landings and takeoffs. International passengers led the way with an increase of 9% and cargo increased 4.3% compared to the same three-month period in 2011.

"We are pleased to see two consecutive months of growth in passenger traffic, but volatile energy prices continue to pose challenges for the aviation industry," said Tom Naughton, Interim CEO of the Wayne County Airport Authority. "Developing economic opportunities from air cargo continues to be a top priority."
