ACI Europe: Passenger traffic growth in 2015 strong, but freight stagnates

ACI Europe reported (05-Feb-2016) passenger traffic at European airports increased 5.2% year-on-year in 2015, with EU airports increasing by 5.6% and non-EU airports reporting growth of 3.9%. Among EU airports, airports in Ireland, Portugal, Greece, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia and Lithuania achieved double-digit growth. The slower growth at non-EU airports was mainly due to a significant decline in demand for air travel across Russian and Ukrainian airports, as well as almost flat growth in Norway, despite a significant growth in passengers in Iceland and sustained growth at most Turkish airports. Freight traffic at Europe's airports only increased by 0.7%, as international trade remained subdued. Aircraft movements increased 2.2%. Looking ahead, ACI Europe director general Olivier Jankovec said: "The positive momentum created by improving economic conditions in the Eurozone, low oil prices and loose monetary policy is likely to persist for most of 2016. This should help keep passenger traffic growing - except for Russian airports." [more - original PR]
