On Wednesday, October 21, Miami International Airport (MIA) welcomed the inaugural arrival of WestJet, Canada's largest low-cost carrier, which will provide nonstop service between Toronto and MIA until April 2010. Flights will operate five times a week until December 16 and will increase to daily service from December 17 to April 30, 2010.

Founded in 1996, WestJet provides scheduled service to 66 cities in Canada, the United States, Mexico and the Caribbean, on a fleet of 81 Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft equipped with leather seats and live seatback television provided by Bell TV. With the addition of WestJet's service, MIA currently has five daily flights to Toronto and two to Montreal.

"We are extremely pleased to welcome WestJet to the MIA airline community," said Miami-Dade Deputy Aviation Director Miguel Southwell. "WestJet brings with its new service and expansive network a stellar reputation as one of Canada's most admired corporate cultures four years running, according to Waterstone Human Capital. Canada continues to be one of MIA's top 10 international markets and we look forward to strengthening those ties with WestJet."
