Berlin airports: Traffic falls in Apr-2010 due to temporary closure of air space

1,430,762 passengers were recorded at the Berlin airports in April, 16.6 per cent less than in the same month the previous year.

A total of 6,082,402 passengers were handled between January and April 2010, 0.4 per cent less than in the same period the previous year.

Never before has a single event such as the eruption of the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull and the subsequent closure of the air space over the course of several days had such a serious impact on passenger figures at the Berlin airports. A total of 3,143 flights were cancelled between 15 and 24 April and more than 300,000 passengers were unable to check in. Berlin Airports has lost some €5 million in sales.

Schoenefeld Airport recorded 486,199 passengers in April, representing a 9.2 per cent decrease.

944,563 passengers were recorded in Tegel in the same period, representing a 19.9 per cent decrease.

Schoenefeld and Tegel together recorded 16,249 flight movements, 14 per cent less than in the same month the previous year.

Nevertheless, air freight flown in April rose by 25.4 per cent to 1,913 tons.
