Almost 1.6 million passengers travelled through Dublin Airport in May-2010

Passenger throughput at Dublin Airport was almost 1.6 million in May a 15% decline on the same period last year, according to the Dublin Airport Authority.

When airspace closures as a result of volcanic ash are taken into account the underlying decline in passenger traffic was 9%. Approx. 100,000 fewer passengers travelled during May as a direct consequence of this.

Passenger volumes to and from continental Europe fell by 12% with more than 865,000 passengers travelling to European destinations.

UK traffic recorded an 18% decrease with 520,000 passengers travelling in May.

Passenger numbers on domestic routes declined by 49% with almost 30,000 passengers taking domestic flights last month. Transatlantic traffic to North America fell by almost 8% with almost 130,000 passengers travelling on this route network in May.

Other international passenger traffic, which covers flights to the Middle East, grew by 14% as just over 20,000 passengers travelled this route sector in May.

Year-to-date almost 6.7 million passengers have travelled through Dublin Airport, down 18% over the same period last year. However when the impact of volcanic ash airspace closes are stripped out the underlying decline in passenger traffic is 12% so far this year.
