HK-Shanghai air transport stepped up

16-Jul-2010 Shanghai Hongqiao Airport - one of two in the sprawling city - will be added as a point for scheduled air services between the Mainland and Hong Kong, following a consultation between China's Civil Aviation Administration and Hong Kong's Transport & Housing Bureau.

Each side will be allowed to operate 14 flights weekly between the two places.

Chief Secretary Henry Tang welcomed the result.

"Direct services between Hong Kong and Hongqiao are strategically important as they allow Hong Kong International Airport to have more direct access to the huge market of the Yangtze River Delta, thereby strengthening Hong Kong's role as a regional and international aviation centre. They also provide an additional choice for passengers travelling between the two cities."

He believed it would be a strong push to aviation cooperation between Hong Kong and Shanghai.

The Transport & Housing Bureau is in discussions with Hong Kong-based airlines regarding the operation of the services, and hopes they can start no later than October.
