Schiphol adjusts airport charges marginally by an average of 0.6%

Direct News Source

27-Oct-2010 Amsterdam Airport Schiphol intends to increase its airport charges by an average of 0.6% as of 1 April 2011.

Airport charges are charges associated with aircraft, passengers and security. In 2009, Schiphol lowered its charges while in 2010 its charges remained unchanged.

Investments in the mainport

Schiphol's ambition to be and remain Europe's preferred airport requires ongoing investment in the airport, both now and in the future. By far the most important investment concerns the new baggage system. This system, designed in close consultation with KLM, is crucial for the airport's hub function and for its transfer product. The aim of the system is to enhance the capacity, reliability and quality of baggage processing. The overall investment amounts to more than € 700 million.

This year Schiphol will, for the first time, be charging the costs of the partial completion of the baggage system. Those costs have been factored into the 0.6% increase in airport charges.

Incentive for airlines to fly during off-peak hours

In order to optimise its capacity utilisation ratio, Schiphol considers introducing an incentive programme for airline companies. The purpose of that programme would be to encourage the airlines to use Schiphol during off-peak hours and add new destinations to their networks.

Adjustment to charges structure postponed

In addition to charging on the costs of the new baggage system, Schiphol has proposed a structural adjustment of its airport charges. The consequences of that proposal for the mainport are a source of controversy between Schiphol and a substantial number of airlines.

This is why Schiphol has decided to postpone the adjustment of the charges structure for six months, and to use the intervening period for an external study, by a team of international strategic consultants, into the effects of the measure on the mainport and the network. The outcome of that study will be incorporated into the 1 April 2011 consultation.

Intended rate proposal as of 1 April 2011

The overall rates per OD passenger and transfer passenger (the Passenger Service Charge and the Security Charge) will remain virtually unchanged compared with the current rates (€27.20 and €13.21 respectively as of 1 April 2011).
