Frankfurt Airport’s runways fully operational following major snow storm

09-Dec-2010 Passengers should expect flight delays and cancellations today at Frankfurt Airport (FRA) following the heavy snowfall that hit the region last night and resulted in a four-hour closure of flight operations.

From 22:09 (Wednesday night) to 02:17 (Thursday morning) takeoffs and landings at FRA were not possible. "Although our Winter Services team worked nonstop throughout the evening and night, the heavy snowfall prevented us from keeping the runway system free of snow and ice for a while," said a Fraport spokesperson. "Obviously, safety is our highest priority. When runway breaking measurements do not meet the required safety standards - despite repeated clearing of the runways - then we have no choice but to stop flight operations temporarily."

Meanwhile, FRA's runway system is fully operational. The immediate focus is on getting flight and terminal operations back to normal as quickly as possible and to process the backlog caused by delayed and cancelled flights. Passengers flying via FRA today are kindly requested to contact their airline about the status of their flights.

Due to the storm-related flight delays and cancellations, some passengers had to be accommodated last night in hotels throughout region. For those passengers who stayed the night in the terminals, Fraport AG activated additional service teams to provide care and supplies such as complimentary drinks and snacks as well as blankets and sleeping cots.
