Airport conditions at JFK continue to affect Air Jamaica’s flights

Direct News Source

28-Dec-2010 New York’s JFK airport is yet to recover from the recent blizzard that affected the US East Coast, and current airport conditions make it difficult for a return to normalcy.

Over the last two days, up to 6,000 flights have been affected throughout the USA with tens of thousands of passengers inconvenienced. This storm is now noted as the 6th worst storm in the US since record keeping began in 1869.

Based on the latest official information from the authorities, Air Jamaica will hold all flights into New York John F Kennedy International Airport until issues with ground handling logistics have been resolved. Air Jamaica continues to remain in close contact with the authorities and will be guided by their updates to schedule flights to New York (JFK) as conditions improve.

This blizzard has had widespread effect on air travel including two Air Jamaica's flights 19 and 11 on December 27 which were dispatched to arrive at New York (JFK) at 6 am on December 27, one hour after the expected opening of that airport as advised by the authorities.

While the flights were en route to New York, Air Jamaica was advised of the extended closure due to the airport's inability to clear the continuous snow blowing on the runways. The flights were then diverted to Dulles Airport in Washington, DC. We arranged for 10 buses to transport passengers from Dulles Airport to New York to complete their journey. Operations at all airports were hampered by staff shortage and equipment not functioning as expected in the prevailing conditions. All passengers from these flights are now safely in New York.

Throughout this period of severe weather in the northeast US and at all times, Air Jamaica considers our passengers our singular priority and we will continue to work for the completion of all our flights despite the difficult conditions and ensuing delays.

Passengers who have been affected by these schedule changes will be rebooked on later flights as available. There will be no fees for date or flight changes for this affected period.

Passengers are advised to contact reservations at 1-888-FLY-AIRJ (1-888-359-2475) in Jamaica or 1-800-523-5855 in North America for rescheduling options and to make new travel arrangements. Updates are also available at www.AirJamaica.com.
