ELFAA reports 6.1% rise in 2010 passenger numbers

European Low Fares Airline Association (ELFAA) reports (22-Feb-2011) the following traffic highlights in 2010:

• Passenger numbers: 172.4 million +6.1% year-on-year;
  • easyJet: 49.6 million;
  • Flybe: 7.3 million;
  • Jet2.com: 3.3 million;
  • Norwegian: 13.2 million;
  • Ryanair: 72.7 million;
  • Sverigeflyg: 0.6 million;
  • transavia.com: 5.1 million;
  • Vueling: 11 million;
  • Wizz Air: 9.6 million;
• Passenger load factor: 82.3%, +0.3 ppt
  • easyJet: 87.2%;
  • Flybe: n/a;
  • Jet2.com: 84.7%;
  • Norwegian: 78%;
  • Ryanair: 82%;
  • Sverigeflyg: 73%;
  • transavia.com: 76%;
  • Vueling: 72.6%;

  British Airways (BA) is preparing to disband bmibaby, the low-cost unit it unwelcomely acquired from bmi after previous owner Lufthansa failed to find a buyer. But as the saying goes: one man’s meat in another man’s poison and the news of bmibaby’s grounding was welcomed by multiple airlines including Monarch, Flybe and Jet2.com, all of which are swiftly stepping in to backfill capacity.

  Anemic-turns-dynamic is not exclusive to bmibaby’s network but a development seen following the recent demise of other small- and medium-sized airlines in Europe such as Spanair, Malev and Cimber Sterling. In those cases, competitors have reacted swiftly and within a couple of days to fill the void.

  bmibaby’s closure is indicative of a recent development in Europe: the lavish injection of capital in loss-making carriers is coming to a standstill with public and private shareholders alike halting the operations of these entities, mostly small- and medium sized airlines, a trend long overdue and induced by low or no economic growth in most EU countries implementing stark austerity measures, and high fuel prices.

  Cyprus Airways is facing intensifying competition in its local market while it contends with falling revenue and rising expenses. A turnaround plan is underway to streamline the airline’s operations in attempt to strengthen the carrier prior to raising new capital and a potential sale to a strategic investor. All the while low-cost carriers are growing in influence in the key Cyprus-Europe market.

  In 2011 Cyprus Airways’ revenues were down 10.1% to EUR212.4 million while operating costs grew 1.9% to EUR264.7 million, primarily from rising fuel prices. The negative result was attributed to the ongoing economic downturn along with “intensifying competition in the main markets” where the airline operates. The flag carrier expects to be impacted further by Greece’s financial crisis while unrest in the Middle East is expected to continue to create uncertainty.
