Kenya Airways reports (26-Jan-2012) the following traffic highlights for the three months ended Dec-2011:

• Passenger numbers: 956,742, +15.4% year-on-year;
  • Europe: 117,527, +14.7%;
  • Middle East, Far East and India: 131,126, +6.8%;
  • Within Africa (excluding Kenya): 502,435, +14.1%;
  • Within Kenya: 205,654, +26%;
• Passenger traffic (RPKs): +9.9%;
• Capacity (ASKs): +6.5%;
• Passenger load factor: 72%, +2.2 ppts;
  • Europe: 73.4%;
  • Middle East, Far East and India: 75.4%;
  • Within Africa (excluding Kenya): 68.4%, +5.4 ppts;
  • Within Kenya: 74.6%, +4.3 ppts;

  Kenya Airways plans to launch its first services to North America, South America and Australia by 2017, making it one of the few carriers to serve every inhabited continent. While these three continents will give Africa's currently fifth-largest airline by seats a global presence, its future is pegged on Asia, with the carrier over the next 10 years planning to launch seven new routes into China, six in the Indian Subcontinent and three across North and Southeast Asia as well as having a growing presence in Europe and the Middle East. It is poised to become Africa's largest carrier.

  Growth will be fuelled by Africa's status as a burgeoning market, as well as reliance on partners: Kenya Airways will open routes to SkyTeam member hubs in Xiamen (Xiamen Airlines), Hanoi (Vietnam Airlines), Seoul (Korean Air), Moscow (Aeroflot) and Prague (Czech Airlines). The intercontinental focus follows Kenya's strong emphasis on regional Africa, with the carrier aiming to serve every African nation by the end of 2013.

  Asia Pacific airlines are coming off a difficult 2011, thanks to stubbornly high fuel prices and weaker yields in a challenging global economic environment. But not all the problems are necessarily external. Overcapacity is looming as a threat in 2012 as the region's full service airlines gear up for a period of growth and change in the coming decade. Balancing capacity and demand in choppy and unpredictable economic times is not easy and the coming year looks like being one in which at least temporary oversupply is very likely.

  Record aircraft delivery levels are being maintained even as traffic growth slows. The upshot of that combination of factors is lower load factors and reduced yields, made more notable as the finance sector - a key user of premium services - is undergoing sometimes savage staff cutbacks. That in turn implies damage to airlines' bottom lines in what is now an intensely competitive market, with low cost airlines, Gulf carriers and Chinese airlines each vying for larger shares of markets which were historically the territory of the region's flag carriers.
