Ryanair to open 50th base at Paphos in Apr-2012

Ryanair announced (10-Jan-2012) plans to open its 50th base at Paphos (Cyprus) in Apr-2012, basing two aircraft and offering 14 routes. The LCC stated the USD140 million investment will result in over 600,000 passengers into the region and sustain over 600 jobs. Routes from Paphos will include Chania, Oslo, Frankfurt Hahn, Patras, Kaunas, Pisa, Krakow, Rome, London, Stockholm, Memmingen, Thessaloniki, Milan and Treviso. [more - original PR]

  Cyprus Airways is facing intensifying competition in its local market while it contends with falling revenue and rising expenses. A turnaround plan is underway to streamline the airline’s operations in attempt to strengthen the carrier prior to raising new capital and a potential sale to a strategic investor.   In 2011 Cyprus Airways’ revenues were down 10.1% to EUR212.4 million while operating costs grew 1.9% to EUR264.7 million, primarily from rising fuel prices. The negative result was attributed to the ongoing economic downturn along with “intensifying competition in the main markets” where the airline operates. The flag carrier expects to be impacted further by Greece’s financial crisis while unrest in the Middle East is expected to continue to create uncertainty.

  In spite of high oil prices and a Europe-wide economic recession Ryanair further distanced itself from its full service peers and reported a remarkable 25% increase in net profit for FY2011/12 to a record EUR503 million. Operating profit lifted 40% year-on-year to EUR683.2 million. Much to the annoyance and envy of Lufthansa and certainly Air France-KLM Group, which both recorded a deterioration of their financial performance in the most recent financial year, Ryanair improved its net margin by 1ppt to 12% and was able to maintain its operating margin at 14%. This is well above the EBIT margin performance of Europe’s full service carriers. Air France-KLM’s operating margin was negative in FY2011 while Lufthansa Group’s adjusted operating margin came in a 3% and IAG’s operating margin also reached a meagre 3%.
