Virgin Australia to launch Melbourne-Los Angeles, Perth-Abu Dhabi service; cease Sydney-Abu Dhabi

Virgin Australia announced (20-Sep-2016) plans to launch service from Melbourne to Los Angeles and Perth to Abu Dhabi in 2017. The carrier will operate five times weekly Melbourne-Los Angeles service from 04-Apr-2017 using Boeing 777-300ER aircraft and three times weekly Perth-Abu Dhabi service from 09-Jun-2017 using A330-200 aircraft. Virgin Australia Group CEO John Borghetti said: "The United States is a key market for Virgin Australia and this enables us to service Los Angeles from the three biggest gateways in Australia - Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney. In partnership with Delta Air Lines, we will soon offer 25 services each week from Australia to Los Angeles ". To enable the introduction of services between Melbourne and Los Angeles, Virgin Australia will cease three times weekly Sydney-Abu Dhabi service after 04-Feb-2017 and will reduce Brisbane-Los Angeles frequency from daily to six times weekly from 07-Apr-2016. Twice daily Sydney-Abu Dhabi service will continue, with Etihad to add three new weekly services on the route in Feb-2017. [more - Virgin Australia PR] [more - Melbourne Tullamarine Airport PR ]
