Aer Lingus reports strong second quarter, but not enough to offset first quarter losses

2-Sep-11 4:38 PM

Aer Lingus reported encouraging earnings in the second quarter (three months to 30-Jun-2011) and sees a favourable outlook for the remainder of the year. The strong 2Q2011 result, however, was not enough to offset losses in the first quarter, which left Aer Lingus in the red at the operating and net levels at the half-year point.

Ireland considers abolition of EUR10 travel tax, Ryanair asks for more

2-Dec-10 3:58 PM

Ireland’s Minister for Tourism, Mary Hanafin, stated in Nov-2010 that the Irish Government would consider scrapping the controversial EUR10 air travel tax in its forthcoming budget as it has failed to "return the revenues expected". Minister Hanafin said the government had forecast EUR125 million in annual revenue from the tax, but said it would raise just EUR80 million this year due to a decline in passenger traffic.

CAPA’s Hottest Airlines to watch in 2011: Europe

9-Nov-10 5:09 PM

The European airline market was battered by the global financial crisis, recording a combined loss of USD4.3 billion in 2009, according to IATA. Europe's tepid economic recovery, the ash cloud crisis, difficulties in cutting capacity and massive structural changes within the short-haul market have conspired to make 2010 another challenging year. Losses are anticipated at USD1.3 billion in 2010, making it the only region to be unprofitable in an otherwise strong year for recovery elsewhere. But there are some bright spots in the region. In this report, CAPA reviews the European airlines expected to make waves in 2011.

Poor future prospects for Irish regional airports – any opportunity for a private sector saviour?

21-Oct-10 5:20 PM

For a variety of reasons Dublin Airport’s annual passenger traffic may have fallen from 24 million to 18 million over the last three years, but it still dominates the entire Irish aviation landscape, with its influence spreading into Northern Ireland. Amidst arguments over the efficacy of public service obligation routes connecting some of Ireland’s remote airports, the future seems bleak for most of them as Dublin is increasingly accessible by road. Dublin is only three hours from places like Sligo and Knock - and a Metro line to the airport is to be built that would connect at the main rail stations. Calls for some form of privatisation at some of the airports are becoming more strident, but would any investor perceive a long term future for them?

Flybe CEO, Jim French Regional UK airline market takes new directions as flybe looks for excitement

21-Sep-10 4:29 PM

The regional UK airline market, led by flybe, is a highly competitive sector which has struggled through the global financial crisis. The state of the industry (and green populism) prompted UK Transport Secretary Philip Hammond, in late Jun-2010, to comment that domestic flying in the UK “will become, in time, a thing of the past”, with air services to be increasingly replaced by fast trains. Airlines, including British Airways, Ryanair and flybe quickly rejected the comments.

Flybe CEO, Jim French Finnair-Flybe pact: A sign of regional airline deals to come?

11-Aug-10 3:13 PM

Finnair has confirmed plans to increase its domestic and international feeder traffic network in cooperation with the UK’s LCC-cum-regional airline Flybe. Cooperation will be on various Finnish domestic routes including those to Tampere and Turku; also to Tallinn in Estonia. The cooperation will commence on 31-Oct-2010 using three “propeller-driven” aircraft (presumably Dash 8 Q400s) based at Helsinki Airport.
