Complacency is the biggest risk to airline safety record in the US
As regional airlines gather this week for the Regional Airline Association convention in Milwaukee, they remain under the safety cloud created by the 12-Feb-2009 Colgan Airways accident, but they should be heartened by last week’s National Transportation Safety Board professionalism symposium which gave the industry the clear good marks. Many panelists expressed how impressed they were with some regional programs. Even so, it also provided enough criticism to keep that cloud overhead. Indeed, it is hoped that the Regional Airline Association will give a progress report on its single level of safety initiative launched after Colgan. Many questions remain surrounding 'good regionals' and 'bad regionals'.
US airline uptick could finally be here
Just as airline CEOs indicated during the fourth quarter analyst calls, the industry may finally be seeing the turnaround, reflected by new statistics from the Air Transport Association (ATA). Reversing a 14-month trend, US airlines saw January passenger revenue rise 1.4% in January compared to Jan-2009, according to the ATA. However, most managers remained cautious about the year.
Outsourcing and online bookings. Latest moves by American Eagle and Continental to cut jobs
Even as pilots are continuing to grumble about mainline jobs going to regional airlines, so too are American Eagle pilots, now that Chautauqua has joined the American Airline stable at Chicago from its former TWA deployment over St Louis. American Eagle, one of the highest cost, and least profitable major/regional alliance programs, is continuing to look at cutting costs and has hired Republic Airways Holdings subsidiary to do it, as part of a “broader reshaping” of American’s O’Hare operations, the Chicago Tribune reported. Chautauqua has been an American Connection carrier since 2000.
Employment down again for US carriers
US scheduled airline employment dropped 3.3% in Nov-2009 from the year-ago period, the 17th consecutive decline in full-time equivalent employees (FTEs) from the same month in the previous year, according to the Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS). Full-time employment for the US scheduled carrier totaled 379,000, a loss of 12,800 employees and the lowest total for any month since 1993.
