Belarus aims to privatise Belavia in 2013, with Russian carriers the most likely suitors
Belarus and its aviation industry have come under the spotlight in recent months, not least for its air services dispute with Russia which led to the temporary suspension of all Minsk-Moscow services in late Mar-2012. Discussions regarding the privatisation of national carrier Belavia have also been occurring, with the privatisation likely in 2013 according to Belarus’ Transport Minister. Aeroflot is rumoured to be interested in purchasing the carrier, although other Russian companies are also reported to be interested.
In Apr-2012 the subject of Belavia’s potential privatisation emerged after the Belarusian Government revealed plans to convert state-owned transportation enterprises into open joint stock companies by 2015. Belarusian Transportation Minister Ivan Shcherbo confirmed Belavia was included in these plans with privatisation most likely to occur in 2013.
Finland to see structural changes in air traffic. Upswing in LCC operations
A record number of new routes from Finland to destinations in Europe have commenced as part of the summer 2011 season, driven by an increased LCC offering. As Norwegian CEO Bjorn Kjos stated last month upon the opening of a base in Helsinki, “the boom of low-cost flights is especially apparent in central Europe and in several Nordic countries. The structural changes to air traffic in Finland are only just beginning”.
European and Middle East carriers fighting for market share on Europe-Middle East route
European carriers are becoming increasingly concerned by the Middle East airline threat on their core international businesses. CEOs from British Airways, Air France and Lufthansa have all voiced their opinions lately, as Middle East airlines continue to expand their global networks. But the European flag carriers are not standing idly by. Several are rapidly expanding their presence in the Middle East, to maintain and/or grow their share of this promising market. Emirates is the clear market leader, with a 21.0% share of capacity on Middle East-Europe routes. Qatar Airways is the second largest, with 8.7%, while Lufthansa, British Airways and Air France have just 5.6%, 3.5% and 2.7% shares, respectively.
