Second tier LCCs playing major role in reshaping European aviation (Part 1)
European LCCs, led by Ryanair, easyJet and Air Berlin, commanded 32% of intra-Europe capacity (seats) in 2009, representing spectacular growth from just 4.6% less than 10 years ago in 2001 and a 20.2% share in 2005. But the 'big three' are just part of the story. This special two-part CAPA report looks beyond the headline-grabbing 'big three' European LCCs to provide updates on more than 20 of Europe’s secondary LCCs. Part I reviews Air Southwest, Anadolujet, Atlasjet Airlines, Belle Air, Blue Express, Blue Air, bmibaby, CLICK4SKY, Flybe, Germanwings, Iceland Express and Jet2.com, while Part II (coming soon) will review the progress at Monarch, NIKI, Pegasus Airlines, SkyExpress, Smart Wings, Sun Express, Sverigeflyg, Thomson Airways, Transavia.com, TUIFly, Wind Jet and Wizz Air.
European LCCs gain passengers, while network carriers lose passengers, in 2009
The European Low Fare Airline Association (EFLAA) stated its 11 members (Blue Air, bmibaby, easyJet, Flybe, Jet2.com, Norwegian, Ryanair, SverigeFlyg, transaviation.com, Vueling and Wizz Air) carried 162.5 million passengers in 2009, an 8.7% year-on-year increase, equating to an additional 13 million passengers in the year.
Romania LCC capacity share expanding as Blue Air and Wizz Air battle for local supremacy
Both domestic and international capacity share has steadily swung in favour of LCCs in Romania during the course of the last four years, gaining ground from 2.2% to 18.4% (domestic) and from 9.9% to 37.8% (international) for the period Jan-Aug in each of those years.
Blue Air expands Bacau Airport capacity with new routes
Blue Air is continuing its support of Bacau Airport, adding further capacity to the airport with the launch of two new routes from Bacau. Blue Air launched three times weekly Bacau-Valencia service and twice weekly Bacau-London Luton services as part of its Summer Schedule, effective 01-Jun-2009 and 02-Jun-2009, respectively.
Blue Air focuses on route network expansion
Blue Air, based at Bucharest Aurel Vlaicu International Airport (Baneasa), launched three times weekly Bucharest-Catania service on 15-Jan-09. Catania is the eighth destination served by the LCC in Italy, and is now the 29th destination in Blue Air’s international network. In its Winter Programme 2008/09, Blue Air introduced three times weekly Brussels-London Stansted service.
