European airlines ramp-up capacity to China
Asia Pacific, particularly China, is one of the current destination hotspots for European carriers, with connections between Europe and China improving in recent months and over the past couple of years. The initial focus was obviously on providing connectivity between key European hubs and the capital city of Beijing, with services to Shanghai also quite extensive, although a number of carriers are adding service to secondary, albeit still large destinations in China, such as Chengdu, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Chongqin, Urumqi, Sancha, Dalian and Harbin.
China Air Show: China welcomes C919 to the world; manufacturers reaffirm committment to China market
China International Aviation & Aerospace Exhibition (Airshow China) was held on 16/21-Nov-2010 in Zhuhai and showcased the rise of China’s civil aircraft manufacturer and also the growing importance of the Chinese civil aviation industry to international manufacturers and suppliers. A breakthrough for the event was rising domestic participation with Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) having a stand at Airshow for the first time. COMAC's C919 was the big news of the Airshow, racking up orders for 100 aircraft.
Chinese cargo growth leading the recovery worldwide but some challenges ahead
With China’s GDP surging in the first half of 2010 in response to a stronger global economy, it is no surprise that the Chinese air freight market is going from strength to strength, as the country’s manufacturing sector recovers at a cracking pace following the global financial downturn. But the Chinese air freight segment, still in its formative stages, is highly fragmented. At the beginning of the year, the CAAC stated it would focus on the development of the country’s cargo industry and encourage cargo airlines to undergo mergers and acquisitions, restructuring and business cooperation. Furthermore, in its Development Strategic Plan, the CAAC stated it plans to develop at least one internationally competitive airline company and one internationally competitive cargo airline by 2030. In this article, we review the most recent developments of China's air freight market participants.
Shenzhen Airlines' assets seized as fuel bill bites, but profitability continues into 1Q2009
The ongoing economic recession is taking its toll on China’s airline industry. China’s largest private airline, Shenzhen Airlines’ USD26.5 million ticketing account was reportedly seized by the Second Intermediate People's Court of Beijing, as remittance for outstanding fuel debts owed to South China Bluesky Aviation Oil. The carrier cited fluctuating fuel prices and the economic recession, which had restricted the airline’s cash flow in 2008, for the default fuel bill.
