Republic reports double-digit 2Q loss with 631% swing

3-Aug-11 3:20 PM

Once the analysts’ darling and a top performer in the regional airline industry, Republic’s fortunes have fallen dramatically since its acquisition of Frontier and Midwest and that is reflected in its second quarter earnings when it posted a USD14.9 million net loss, a 631.1% swing from the USD2.6 million profit earned in the previous corresponding quarter. It joins just American in posting losses for the quarter. The results only served to exacerbate the USD55 million lost in the first quarter.

US airlines’ cautious capacity approach proves beneficial

22-Jul-11 10:41 AM

Cautious capacity growth plans for 2011 highlight concerns among US carriers in adding back seats at a rate that could create the excess capacity situations of previous post-recession recoveries. Instead, airlines are focussing on the protection of yields and profits as escalating fuel costs threaten the global aviation industry’s profits.

American Airlines CEO, Gerard Arpey At long last, divestiture for American Eagle

21-Jul-11 1:31 PM

As expected, and as no other regional airline wanted to buy it, AMR is divesting its regional airline subsidiary American Eagle by spinning off Eagle stock to AMR shareholders. This was also expected since early reports said one of the options was to set up Eagle as an independent, publicly traded company with stock given to AMR shareholders.

Teamsters consolidate Republic Airways' unions; National Mediation Board faces test with Delta case

30-Jun-11 10:40 AM

In what is to be the leading edge of a trend with airline holding companies, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) won representation for all pilots at the six airlines within Republic Airways Holdings, consolidating representation under a single union. IBT won 68% of the vote which must now be certified by the National Mediation Board.

Asia's first time flyers the big winners as Paris Air Show PR juggernaut winds down

24-Jun-11 5:35 PM

The major beneficiaries of this week’s frenetic (public relations) activity just outside Paris live half a world away. They are Asia’s emerging travellers – the millions that have never stepped inside an aircraft, but for whom air travel is becoming attainable. That opportunity took a major step forward as Asian carriers – many of whom the world had never heard of a decade or even five years ago – stepped up in front of the world’s media to order narrowbodies for the mass markets they see blossoming at home.

Frontier pilots agree to Republic’s concession plan

21-Jun-11 3:20 PM

An overwhelming majority of Frontier pilots ratified a plan for significant cost savings in the face of fuel price increases experienced since the beginning of the year. The concessions, coupled with a recent abatement in fuel costs are expected to put the low-cost carrier on a good track for recovery despite heavy competition over its main hub at Denver.
