Is Saudi Arabia's last LCC nasair set to join Sama?
Saudi Arabia’s LCC experiment may be drawing to an unwelcome close. nasair, the kingdom’s first – and now sole surviving – LCC announced it has suffered a 1Q2011 loss, due to the troubled situation in the Middle East and North Africa reducing passenger traffic and the increasing price of oil.
nasair looking at IPO in two to three years
Saudi-based LCC nasair is looking towards the possibility of an IPO as early as 2012 or 2013. The carrier, now Saudi Arabia’s sole LCC after the failure of Sama in Aug-2010, expects to move into profitability in 2011 and from there progress towards an IPO.
Why don't women run airlines?
IT WAS INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY on the 8th of March, 2010, and the Indian Ministry of Civil Aviation proudly “acknowledged” flag carrier Air India’s historic flight between Mumbai and New York JFK. It was unique that day in that flight AI-141 operated with an all-female flight crew on the B777-200LR. There was no Air India man in sight. It was different at head office.
(This report, the first in a series of four, is taken from the Oct-2010 edition of Airline Leader.)
European and Middle East carriers fighting for market share on Europe-Middle East route
European carriers are becoming increasingly concerned by the Middle East airline threat on their core international businesses. CEOs from British Airways, Air France and Lufthansa have all voiced their opinions lately, as Middle East airlines continue to expand their global networks. But the European flag carriers are not standing idly by. Several are rapidly expanding their presence in the Middle East, to maintain and/or grow their share of this promising market. Emirates is the clear market leader, with a 21.0% share of capacity on Middle East-Europe routes. Qatar Airways is the second largest, with 8.7%, while Lufthansa, British Airways and Air France have just 5.6%, 3.5% and 2.7% shares, respectively.
Syria looks to private sector to modernise airports as tourism grows
Syria’s Government has given initial approval to the Ministry of Transport to work with the private sector to operate, develop and modernise the country’s airport infrastructure. The Middle East is a region where airport privatisation lags behind most other regions but the drive towards privatisation by a variety of means in Saudi Arabia at least indicates that opportunities like this will arise occasionally. Having said that, Syria has barely registered on the radar in the past. What does Syria offer to the private sector?
Syria to get a new airline from next month
The moribund Syrian aviation market is set to experience new life. Lu'lua (Pearl) Airlines plans to commence services on 01-May-09, becoming Syria’s first private commercial carrier. The carrier expects to receive its first two BAe-146-300 aircraft at Damascus International Airport on 29-Apr-09.
