Birmingham Airport repositioning as a national UK gateway point
In the 1980s and 1990s there was one regional airport in Europe that was notably and successfully aggressive in its attempts to convince government of the value of this genus – Manchester. Since then, Munich has taken the baton, with even better results. Now attention swings back to the UK and to Birmingham Airport, which is going a step further, by attempting to persuade government that it should be the extra capacity provider for the southern part of Britain, rather than one or more of the London airports, which have been told that they cannot have any more runway space. CAPA visited Birmingham Airport to discover what it takes for a mid-ranking (8.6 million passengers in 2011) European airport to assume such a position of responsibility within a national air transport framework that hosts over 220 million passengers per annum through its 40 largest airports.
UK carriers rush to snap up bmibaby’s planned route closures
British Airways (BA) is preparing to disband bmibaby, the low-cost unit it unwelcomely acquired from bmi after previous owner Lufthansa failed to find a buyer. But as the saying goes: one man’s meat in another man’s poison and the news of bmibaby’s grounding was welcomed by multiple airlines including Monarch, Flybe and Jet2.com, all of which are swiftly stepping in to backfill capacity.
Anemic-turns-dynamic is not exclusive to bmibaby’s network but a development seen following the recent demise of other small- and medium-sized airlines in Europe such as Spanair, Malev and Cimber Sterling. In those cases, competitors have reacted swiftly and within a couple of days to fill the void.
bmibaby’s closure is indicative of a recent development in Europe: the lavish injection of capital in loss-making carriers is coming to a standstill with public and private shareholders alike halting the operations of these entities, mostly small- and medium sized airlines, a trend long overdue and induced by low or no economic growth in most EU countries implementing stark austerity measures, and high fuel prices.
Who wants to unite with Manchester?
Abandoning the habits of a lifetime, Manchester Airports Group (MAG), under the command of relatively new and aviation outsider CEO Charles Cornish, has announced it is seeking equity investment to equip it to bid for one or more airports; the two going hand-in-hand. Momentarily it is not clear exactly what MAG has in mind and neither it nor the municipal owners are being forthcoming either. MAG is Britain’s second largest airport operator after the depleted BAA and is almost unique in that it remains in public ownership. Who are the potential investors and just what would they be buying into?
Can Birmingham Airport really be a better alternative than expansion of the London airports?
For several years now Birmingham Airport, which has just been voted the best large gateway in the UK in a consumer survey, has been promoting the concept of becoming an alternative London airport. Such a notion has become a tad more realistic since it became evident that not only does the present UK Government not support any new airport infrastructure for the foreseeable future – in London and the southeast of England or anywhere else for that matter – but neither does the official opposition party. UK aviation has to make the best of what it’s already got.
UK airports cater for LCCs while package vacation demand decreases but supply increases
The expression ‘mixed messages’ is often banded around in the air transport business. There is a clear case of it in the UK right now where many airports are behaving as if there is little future for the traditional package holiday delivered by dedicated charter airlines while at the same time the LCCs, who were supposed to supplant the charter airlines with their FIT-friendly offer, are increasingly turning to the package vacation in order to differentiate themselves from the opposition and to appease growing demand from their customers.
Airport financial reports emphasise differing rates of economic recovery
Recent airport financial results indicate an overall improvement in prospects but are also indicative of the different rates of recovery in the global economy. Airport Investor Monthly has received a variety of three, six-month and annual financial reports from a diverse set of airport operators including Aeroports de Montreal (Canada), Birmingham (UK), Brussels (Belgium), MAHB of Malaysia and the three private airport operators in Mexico.
