British and Irish airport investments continue busy merger and acquisition activity
If there was any doubt that the UK & Ireland remains one of the most dynamic air transport markets in the world that suspicion was dispelled by the level of recent and potential activity in airport M&A.
With Edinburgh Airport about to change hands, Glasgow Prestwick and Manston (Kent) airports may follow this year, as will London Stansted, later. Cardiff Airport’s CEO resigned after a politician complained about lack of investment by the operator and there are plans to re-open Plymouth Airport under new ownership.
Meanwhile, in Ireland, the case has been made for a change of ownership at Shannon Airport - but not an outright privatisation – signaling the potential break-up of the Dublin Airport Authority.
Ryanair in the dock
Ryanair may have to repay millions of euros as Germany’s highest court ruled fees it has received to operate from airports may amount to subsidies in breach of EU competition rules. Lufthansa and airberlin have been awarded the right to pursue legal action accordingly. Together with the other difficulties the Irish airline faces in Germany could this be the beginning of the end for its operations there? Or might there be even more significant outcomes?
EBITDA margin reveals best performed airports
As a tough year for the aviation industry comes to a close, a review of EBITDA margins achieved by a variety of airport operators globally reveals some surprising results.
London City Airport - a marketable proposition?
Amidst the turmoil surrounding the sale of London Gatwick Airport last year and the Oct-2010 Court of Appeal ruling that confirms the sale of Stansted Airport, it is often overlooked that Greater London and the southeast of England is home to at least seven commercial airports serving the catchment area. One of them, London City Airport – LCY - (the only one actually within London) has been arguably the most successful in recent years in terms of passenger traffic growth. There is a suggestion that it could be sold off in 2011 by its majority owner GIP, which now has London Gatwick airport in its portfolio as a competitor to London Heathrow. What benefits might LCY offer to an investor now?
“Flybe to the Moon...” Behind the UK airline's massive Embraer order
Flybe has propelled itself into a whole new ballgame, following a "substantial" agreement with Embraer to purchase up to 140 88-seat E175 and E-family aircraft, with the first delivery (of the firm orders) scheduled for Sep-2011 through Mar-2017. The order comprises 35 (firm) E175 aircraft valued at USD1.3 billion, 65 options (USD2.3 billion) and 40 purchase rights (USD1.4 billion – making USD5 billion in total). The carrier says this "provides a platform for Flybe’s expansion into Continental Europe.” Having once been given little chance of success as a too-vaguely defined ‘hybrid’ airline, Flybe now claims to be Europe’s largest regional airline and the UK’s largest domestic airline with over 25% market share. It is now set to export a proven business model into continental western Europe. The big question is: as it pokes its nose above the radar, can Flybe sustain the inevitable added competition?
Where next for Infratil?
New Zealand’s power, utilities and transport conglomerate Infratil has released financial highlights for the 12 months ended 31-Mar-2010. They show that revenue and EBITDAF increased at Wellington Airport but both fell at Infratil Airports Europe (IAE), which now comprises just Glasgow Prestwick Airport and Kent International Airport, both wholly owned, since Germany’s Luebeck Airport returned to public sector control. Revenue at AEI was down dramatically. Infratil perseveres with the two European airports, but market conditions will continue to be tough for both of them. Even so there is some light at the end of the tunnel.
