European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation was founded in 1963 to bring together European stated for the purpose of maintaining safety within the field of air traffic management. It now comprises 38 member states and represents the core of the European air traffic management system.
EUROCONTROL holds responsibility for coordination of the efforts of air traffic controllers and Air Navigation Service Providers and aims to create a harmonised and uniform air traffic management system in Europe and coordinate operations between civilian and military traffic. In particular, it is currently focused on supporting aviation stakeholders in the implementation of the Single European Sky, and the associated SESAR Joint Undertaking, paving the way for major reform of European air traffic management by 2013.
It is headquartered in Brussels, Belgium, with units in France, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, the Czech Republic and Germany.
David Mc Millan, who became Director General on 01-Jan-2008, heads EUROCONTROL.
