The Commonwealth of The Bahamas consists of 29 islands. The main airline servicing the region is the government-owned and funded airline Bahamasair, however, the largest airline by fleet operating intra-island services is Western Air. The Bahamas has two international airports: the main is Grand Bahama International Airport and the second Lynden Pindling International Airport.

According to the ICAO, "considerable progress has been made within the legislation of civil aviation in the Bahamas" to improve standards and safety. The Department of Civil Aviation in conjunction with Bahamas Air Traffic Controllers provides safety and navigation services.

The 17th annual Global Airport Development (GAD) conference and attendant Investing in Airports summit were held in Dublin, Ireland, from 15 to 18-Nov-2010, attracting around 230 speakers and delegates at the main conference.

Subsequent to YVRAS’s acquisition of 65% of the UK’s Peel Airports the new CEO, drafted in from the Bahamas, has been outlining ambitious plans, especially for Liverpool Airport, for which he envisages new long haul services, while virtually declaring war on neighbouring Manchester Airport. This could provoke a neo-tribal confrontation, as Manchester also takes on a new CEO later this year.

CAPA Regional Manager UK and Ireland, David Bentley Latin American governments shift military facilities into commercial use

Two governments – those of Ecuador and Panama – announced in Jul-09 that they would convert military bases into commercial airport facilities. The Ecuadorean government sees the potential for a new regional hub at what was the US military’s narcotics surveillance base at Manta Eloy Alfaro International Airport while in Panama the government is keen to attract European tourists through the disused Howard Air Force base.
