Drukair and Bhutan Airlines face a challenging aviation environment in accelerating Bhutan tourism
The Government of Bhutan, previously reluctant to open the country to tourism, has set a target of 100,000 annual tourists, a considerable increase over the 30,000+ seen in recent years. Most will arrive by air, a tall order for a nation whose airlines have, at present, four aircraft with a total of 284 seats, and is not served by any foreign carriers.
Major changes set for Bhutan market as Drukair expands and Tashi Air plans early 2012 launch
Bhutan is the smallest aviation market in Asia and unique in the fact that only one airline operates to/from the nation at present. Drukair (Royal Bhutan Airlines), the national carrier of Bhutan, operates only 8,120 weekly seats to/from the nation’s sole airport, Paro Airport, based on Innovata data for the week ending 11-Sep-2011. However, this is all set to change as a second carrier, Tashi Air, is planning to enter the market and new airports are opened, allowing both carriers to operate domestic services.
Asia aviation rankings: Malaysia close to overtaking Thailand, Philippines gaining on Hong Kong
Asian aviation is growing strongly, with airlines expanding their seating capacity by 7.4% this month, well ahead of the global 6% increase, according to Innovata. The Indian Subcontinent is leading the Asian charge, while China is surprisingly down in 18th place in terms of Asian growth rates, with just a 5.2% increase in seats (domestic and international) this month.
Druk Air operates first service from Bagdogra
Druk Air will operate Bagdogra Airport’s first international service, making the airport a stopover on its Bhutan-Bangkok service from 29-Mar-09. The Civil Aviation Ministry of India agreed to allow the carrier to operate from the airport in West Bangal in 2008. The service will operate four times weekly, using A319-100 aircraft.
