Saudi Arabia's new independent aviation authority heralds more changes for sector

Faced with staid growth in its aviation sector, the Saudi Arabian Government is opening up a number of possible avenues to breathe more life into its civil aviation industry. The latest move, announced in early Nov-2011, is the creation of a new and independent civil aviation authority, separating civil aviation responsibilities from the Ministry of Defence and Aviation.

The move comes as part of a series of Saudi royal decrees that followed last month's death of the Crown Prince Sultan, who headed the Defence Ministry. Several other ministerial level appointments were made at the time as part of a cabinet reshuffle. [909 words]
