Slovenia, Colombia and Eastern Europe among the hottest emerging markets for European travellers

Analysis

The overall numbers may be small, but the growth in seating capacity is spectacular from Europe to a number of emerging markets around the world this summer. Headlining this list is Slovenia, Tajikistan and Georgia in Eastern Europe; El Salvador, Panama and Colombia in Latin America; Rwanda, The Gambia and Togo in Africa; and Cambodia and Vietnam in Asia.

Each of the countries listed below has less than 20,000 seats per week, but many represent the future growth stars for airline and airport route planners. 

The strongest growing countries are well distributed among the key emerging markets for European travellers in Latin America, Africa, Eastern Europe and Asia.

Important Notes:

  • The April data presented here is not be affected by either the timing of Easter or the ash cloud in Apr-2010. The weekly data is based on a representative week that avoids major holidays.The weeks in question are 12-18-Apr-2010 and 11-17-Apr-2011. The Ash cloud was generally treated by the airlines on an ad hoc basis and schedule changes did not filter through to the data presented here;

Travellers avoiding Zimbabwe, Yemen, Afghanistan and Bahrain

On the other hand, several emerging markets are distinctly out of favour and capacity from European markets is being severely curtailed this summer. Zimbabwe, Yemen and Afghanistan head this list. But among the larger of these out-of-favour emerging markets include Bahrain, reflecting recent turmoil in the Gulf state, Montenegro and resort destination Guadeloupe.
