Direct News Source

25-Jan-2012 DUS continues amazing growth with another best year in its history. An additional 1.3 Million passengers used the airport and brought the total number past the 20 Million mark.

The future looks even brighter as airlines add more US and other long-haul flights and connection options and raise the total of weekly intercontinental flights to over 100.

Düsseldorf, Germany - 2011 was another year of amazing growth and record-breaking for Düsseldorf International Airport (DUS). Also called Germany's Next Generation Hub™, DUS counted the 20 Millionth passenger past December, and 20.3 Million total by the end of 2011, a 7.1 percent increase. More than 2 Million passengers transferred at DUS, confirming the effectiveness of the airport's strategy in investing in its hub function.

DUS is a hub for two airlines, Lufthansa and Air Berlin, and increased traffic from both airlines is the main reason for the growth. Moreover, both airlines project more growth for 2012 as DUS remains a focus of their expansion plans, especially by adding long-haul flights. Air Berlin will start flying direct to Las Vegas twice weekly in May and will - also in spring - join Oneworld Alliance; and Lufthansa is adding new direct flights to Tokyo, which will bring the number of weekly intercontinental flights at DUS to over 100 for the first time in the airport's history.
