Direct News Source

07-Mar-2012 Tiger Airways Australia today announced that Sydney will become the airline's second Australian base when operations commence from early July 2012.

From 01 July 2012, three Airbus A320 aircraft will progressively call Sydney home, creating over 150 new jobs and providing up to 10 additional daily return services through Sydney Airport.

Tiger Airways CEO Andrew David says today's news is great for consumers, for domestic tourism and for the economy.

"Three aircraft operating from our second Australian base will provide up to 3,600 extra seats a day through Sydney Airport. This is a win-win for both consumers wanting more low fares as well as for domestic tourism. The creation of over 150 new jobs in Sydney is certainly welcome news for the industry given the current economic climate."

Andrew David also said that this is indicative of a new era for the airline as it has received the green light from CASA, the industry regulator, to progress with its' 2012 business growth plan.

"We are continuing with our future Australian expansion as planned. The business goal was to have all 10 aircraft operating in Australia by second half of 2012 and today's news proves we're on track. An 11th aircraft will be deployed to Australia by August 2012 and further network developments will be announced in due course," said Mr. David.

CEO of Sydney Airport, Kerrie Mather, welcomed the news, saying the new base was great news for Sydney.

"We are delighted that Tiger is setting up a base in Sydney and will operate up to 38 services a day in and out of Sydney, compared to 18 currently. This will cement Sydney's status as Australia's number one destination and Sydney Airport as the nation's gateway airport.

"Low cost carriers are driving growth in aviation right now and Tiger adding 3,600 seats to its Sydney schedule - including a new Sydney-Brisbane route - means there will be more competition and more choice on key corridors," Ms. Mather said.

NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Trade and Investment Andrew Stoner welcomed news that Tiger Airways Australia will establish a new base at Sydney Airport.

"The NSW Government has been working closely with Tiger Airways and we are thrilled with their commitment to our State, which will provide employment and tourism benefits for our economy.

"Tiger Airways' Sydney base will generate immediate employment opportunities as its aircraft will require flight crew, cabin crew and ground crew as well as engineering support" said Mr. Stoner.
