airberlin critical of handling of Berlin Brandenburg opening delays, expects opening in late October

airberlin CEO Hartmut Mehdorn stated the airline was surprised by the delayed opening of Berlin Brandenburg International Airport. "It's a huge embarrassment for Berlin and the whole world is laughing at us now," he said, as quoted by Der Spiegel. He said the carrier only found out about the delay from the media, stating, "Seriously? We would have thought that the CEO of a major airline like Air Berlin would have been informed earlier". He continued, "We were always assured that everything was going smoothly. On the Friday before the opening date was delayed, we were on site with a group of managers". Mr Mehdorn said he believes the launch of the winter 2012/2013 schedule in late Oct-2012 would be "a good time" for the deferred opening of the airport. Mr Mehdorn said the carrier is informing all 1.3 million passengers who have booked to travel from the new airport of the change in services.
