ATA cargo traffic down 4.9% in Oct-2011

Air Transport Association of America (ATA) reports (15-Dec-2011) the following system cargo traffic highlights for its member airlines in Oct-2011:

• Cargo traffic (FTMs): -4.9% year-on-year;
• By carrier:
  • Alaska Airlines: +0.9%;
  • American Airlines: -12%;
  • Continental: -24.5%;
  • Delta: -2.7%;
  • FedEx: -2.3%;
  • Hawaiian: -6.0%;
  • JetBlue: -15.8%;
  • Southwest: +4.2%;
  • United: -9.1%;
  • UPS: -2.9%;
  • US Airways: -15.6%;
• Domestic: -6.0%;
• International: -4.1%;
  • Trans-Atlantic: -7.5%;
  • Latin America: +3.1%;
  • Asia Pacific: -2.2%.

  Airlines and airports are feeling the impact of the current global economic weakness and declining consumer spending in Europe, which is having a noticeable impact on air cargo volumes. Cargo traffic, which generated USD66 billion in revenue in 2010, has declined every month since May-2011, according to IATA upon the release of its Oct-2011 traffic results, with a 4.7% year-on-year reduction in cargo demand in Oct-2011 amid reduced manufacturing confidence and businesses switching to slower modes of transport.

  “Cargo is the story of the month. Since mid-year the market has shrunk by almost 5% and this is far greater than the 1% fall in world trade. Air freight is among the first sectors to suffer when businesses confidence declines,” IATA director general and CEO Tony Tyler said. Meanwhile, Boeing CEO Jim McNerney separately stated the company has seen a softening of freight demand in recent months, describing the freight market as a “watch item”.

  American Airlines has been under pressure to explain how it will increase annual revenue by USD1 billion by 2017. While the number may be daunting, it represents only a 4.2% increase in 2011's overall revenue of USD23 billion. Additionally, American has made revenue leaps before: a USD1.8 billion increase from 2010 to 2011 and USD2.3 billion from 2009 to 2010. It is difficult to separate out previous adverse trading conditions from structural changes, but American has outlined a very achievable agenda independent of revenue growth from any possible merger or acquisition.
