Atlas Air takes delivery of first B747-8F for British Airways

Atlas Air took (04-Nov-2011) delivery of the first of nine B747-8Fs on 03-Nov-2011. The aircraft will be operated by Atlas Air subsidiary, Global Supply Systems, for British Airways World Cargo through a five-year wet-lease agreement.   Consolidation in the US regional airline industry has failed to mirror the success achieved by the country’s network carriers after the latest round of mergers were completed between Delta-Northwest and United-Continental. The tie-ups in the regional sector have only intensified cost pressures at the consolidating carriers, which have left them searching for a viable long-term business model. In the short term, some of those airlines are attempting to work with their major partners to ease the cost inflation, but it is far from certain if legacy airlines intend to show any sympathy to their feeder partners.

  The two largest US regional operators, SkyWest and Republic Airways Holdings, bled a combined USD150 million in losses in 2011 as they endured pain from their attempts to stabilise their business in an uncertain regional marketplace. SkyWest faced a reality check in meeting financial milestones it aimed to achieve through its acquisition of ExpressJet while Republic spent the majority of 2011 wringing USD120 million of costs from its low-cost subsidiary Frontier Airlines. Pinnacle Airlines, in the midst of its own internal restructuring, has pushed back the release of its 2011 financial results.

  China’s air transport industry has entered a stage of slower growth, registering single-digit total air traffic (RTKs, including passenger and cargo traffic) of growth in 2011 according to CAAC. China’s aviation industry experienced double-digit traffic growth from 2004 through 2010, according to CAAC, with 2010 clearly a banner year of recovery for China, after the downturn in 2008/09. 2011's volumes have been well below expectation, particularly since the middle of the year.

  In the wider Asia Pacific region, the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) has noted that Asian carriers are bracing themselves for another tough year in 2012 as the outlook is impacted by the “unresolved concerns about the Eurozone debt crisis and wider uncertainty about the global economic outlook for 2012”. However, the association noted the region’s airlines are faring better than airlines in other regions and that they are still “relatively well placed” to benefit from future growth opportunities.
