CAAC reported (20-Jan-2012) the following traffic highlights for Dec-2011 and 2011:

• Dec-2011:
  • Passenger numbers: 23.0 million, +9.2% year-on-year;
    • Domestic: 21.3 million, +9.1%;
    • Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan: 649,000, +8.3%;
    • International: 1.8 million, +10.0%;
  • Cargo volume: 499,200 tonnes, -3.4%;
    • Domestic: 359,900, +4.1%;
    • Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan: 16,000, -17.1%;
    • International: 139,300, -18.6%;
• FY2011:
  • Passenger numbers: 292.2 million, +9.2%;
    • Domestic: 271.2 million, +9.2%;
    • Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan: 7.6 million, +12.3%;
    • International: 21.0 million, +8.8%;
  • Cargo volume: 5.5 million tonnes, -1.8%;
    • Domestic: 3.8 million tonnes, +1.6%;
    • Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan: 207,300 tonnes, -4.3%;
    • International: 1.8 million tonnes, -8.4%.

  China's passenger growth increased at a rate of 7.5% year-on-year in Oct-2011, according to CAAC data, marking the fifth consecutive month of single-digit growth and a slowdown from Sep-2011's 9.5% increase. Aug-2011’s growth rate of just 4.5% was the slowest pace of expansion since Sep-2008 and there have been only two months of double-digit passenger growth this year. Passenger traffic in China has grown by an average 15.3% p/a over the past decade, or around three times the world average for the same period. So 2011 is definitely a below par performance.

  The freight market however has been much worse. Traffic fell 6.3% in Oct-2011 to 469,400 tonnes.

• More subdued outlook for China in short term but some mighty changes afoot

  The year of the dragon, 2012, is typically the mightiest of the Chinese signs, symbolising dominance and ambition; consequently this should be a time for making a large leap forward. However, indicators and performance in the first few months of 2012 suggest a more subdued outlook, at least on the surface with recent commentary coming out of China revealing a tone of caution and concern, a foreboding situation given the previous robustness of demand in the country. Yet below the surface, there are indeed some mighty changes afoot. Liberalisation and economic growth are laying the foundation for a rapid acceleration, for aviation overall, but more particularly for a new generation of airlines, most of which did not exist a decade ago.
