Cathay Pacific: 2010 will be 'another challenging year for cargo'

Cathay Pacific GM cargo sales and marketing James Woodrow, in the Jan-2012 edition of CXWorld, stated 2012 is "going to be another challenging year for cargo, particularly the first half of the year". He continued: "The market from Asia to Europe will be especially difficult as European governments continue to struggle with the Eurozone crisis. On the other hand the economic indicators in America are rather more encouraging and it is hoped that in the second half of 2012 the US economy will really start to pick up and drive air freight volumes ex-Asia". Mr Woodrow noted there are a number of major new product launches in the pipeline which "should help to drive some volume increases" including the completion of the Cathay Pacific Cargo Terminal, which is scheduled to open in early 2013, and the delivery of several additional Boeing 747-8Fs.

  Airlines and airports are feeling the impact of the current global economic weakness and declining consumer spending in Europe, which is having a noticeable impact on air cargo volumes. Cargo traffic, which generated USD66 billion in revenue in 2010, has declined every month since May-2011, according to IATA upon the release of its Oct-2011 traffic results, with a 4.7% year-on-year reduction in cargo demand in Oct-2011 amid reduced manufacturing confidence and businesses switching to slower modes of transport.

  “Cargo is the story of the month. Since mid-year the market has shrunk by almost 5% and this is far greater than the 1% fall in world trade. Air freight is among the first sectors to suffer when businesses confidence declines,” IATA director general and CEO Tony Tyler said. Meanwhile, Boeing CEO Jim McNerney separately stated the company has seen a softening of freight demand in recent months, describing the freight market as a “watch item”.

  Qantas has announced a bold initiative to set up a new low-cost carrier joint venture in Hong Kong with its long-time Chinese partner, China Eastern Airlines. Jetstar Hong Kong will operate short-haul routes within Asia – including to mainland China, Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asia – from 2013 with an initial fleet of three A320s, growing to 18 A320s by 2015.

  It is a key stepping-stone for the Qantas Group as it grows its Jetstar brand across the region. Jetstar currently has entities in Singapore with Jetstar Asia/Valuair and in Vietnam with Jetstar Pacific. Jetstar Hong Kong will be the group's fourth Asian affiliate as Jetstar Japan, a new joint venture with Japan Airlines that was announced last year, will be launching services in Jul-2012.

  The Jetstar group will bring considerable low-cost experience to the new venture, which will become the first short-haul low fares airline to be based in Hong Kong. The LCC model is, however, a new concept for China Eastern, which is following the pattern of several of its full service counterparts in Asia in working with an experienced partner in the establishment of a LCC offshoot.
