Conditions in UK domestic market continue to deteriorate: Flybe

Flybe, in its 3Q2012 (three months ended 31-Dec-2011) trading update, stated (10-Jan-2012) "conditions in the UK domestic market have continued to deteriorate", with the carrier reporting a 6% decrease in domestic traffic year-on-year. Despite this, the carrier maintained yields year-on-year, with the carrier adding that it "believes current market conditions will force further rationalisation of the European regional and short haul airline market, from which Flybe is well positioned to benefit".   The North European market underwent another shock wave this week with the grounding of Skyways Express and its subsidiary City Airline and the announcement that Finnair is moving ahead with its plans to outsource its short-haul operations to a much lower-cost airline through forging an agreement with Flybe Nordic that covers one third of its European network and 12 Embraer aircraft. The two events are unrelated though are indicative of a market undergoing a fundamental structural change spelling the evaporation of small, independent regional airlines and the disbanding of the traditional operating model of the legacy carriers in Europe, although Finnair still has to demonstrate how its JV with Flybe will bring its short-haul operation back to profitability.

  Stockholm-Arlanda Airport, Sweden-based Skyways Express and Gothenburg, Sweden-based City Airline have cancelled all flights and stopped all payments with immediate effect (22-May-2012) after the owners of the company decided not to provide any further funds.

  If there was any doubt that the UK & Ireland remains one of the most dynamic air transport markets in the world that suspicion was dispelled by the level of recent and potential activity in airport M&A.

  With Edinburgh Airport about to change hands, Glasgow Prestwick and Manston (Kent) airports may follow this year, as will London Stansted, later. Cardiff Airport’s CEO resigned after a politician complained about lack of investment by the operator and there are plans to re-open Plymouth Airport under new ownership.

  Meanwhile, in Ireland, the case has been made for a change of ownership at Shannon Airport - but not an outright privatisation – signaling the potential break-up of the Dublin Airport Authority.
