States affirm intent to work through ICAO in tacking climate change
09-Oct-2009 Member States of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) representing 93% of commercial air traffic today approved a Declaration affirming their commitment to address aviation emissions that contribute to climate change by working through ICAO.
A three-day high-level meeting convened by ICAO on climate change reached agreement on the way governments working together with the industry intend to reduce aviation's climate impact. These proposed measures build on a Programme of Action adopted by the Council of the Organization in June, the first globally-harmonized agreement to address climate impacts from a sector.
The Declaration will form the basis for input by ICAO to discussions on international aviation at the upcoming 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Copenhagen.
ICAO Council President Roberto Kobeh González stated that "the nations of the world that represent the vast majority of international civil aviation traffic have spoken and their commitment is clear."
