Tiger fires up competition in Brisbane

The new services will be Tiger Airways first services to Brisbane Airport, flying direct from Brisbane to Melbourne up to three times per day.

Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) CEO and Managing Director Julieanne Alroe congratulated Tiger Airways on its announcement, saying the new services are a win for passengers.

"A new low cost airline like Tiger brings greater competition, which ultimately means lower airfares and more choices for passengers," Ms Alroe said.

"The placement of Brisbane as a new destination in Tiger's already expansive network also indicates Tiger's confidence in the region as a major hub for tourism and business, at a time when our domestic tourism economy particularly needs a boost."

"Furthermore, Tiger will arrive in Brisbane just in time to take advantage of Brisbane Airport's new and improved road network, offering greater capacity and better connections to the Sunshine and Gold Coasts, cementing Brisbane Airport position as Queensland's gateway airport."

Tiger's new services will help to continue the growth in passenger numbers being experienced over recent months.

The month of September has seen growth in both the International and Domestic passenger movements, with a 2.7% increase in international passengers and 1.1% increase in Domestic passengers travelling through Brisbane.

"The increase in competition and capacity will ensure Brisbane Airport is capable of keeping up with demand while also providing a variety of options with more services and better prices for our passengers," Ms Alroe said.

"BAC is looking forward to working closely with Tiger Airways in the future to grow the network and develop new opportunities for the airline to ensure a strong and sustainable future."
