Worldwide protest by United Flight Attendants for overdue pay
05-Apr-2010 United Airlines Flight Attendants, represented by the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, AFL-CIO (AFA-CWA), will protest worldwide the failure of United Airlines management to negotiate a new contract on time.
After one full year in negotiations, management is nowhere near to addressing the improvements flight attendants seek after pay, benefits, working conditions, and pensions were slashed nearly eight years ago.
United Airlines flight attendants are working at 1994 wage levels in the year 2010 and working 48% more compared with 2002 schedules and staffing. Negotiations between AFA-CWA and United management started nine months prior to the January 7, 2010 amendable date due to a contract provision that was intended to provide flight attendants with a new contract by the amendable date. The improvements to pay, healthcare, retirement and working conditions are now three months overdue.
"The proposals from management are purely concessionary," stated Greg Davidowitch, president of AFA-CWA at United Airlines. "They have refused to present us with a compensation proposal and flight attendants are sick and tired of waiting for the compensation and working conditions we are due. We will not agree to the wholesale destruction of portions of our contract to pay for any perceived improvements."
Since the worldwide picket on January 7th with thousands of flight attendants AFA-CWA has stepped up strike preparedness training and readied members for this next public protest, April 6, 2010, at flight attendant bases around the world.
