Direct News Source

15-Apr-2010 Today, Thursday 15-Apr, as from 4.30 pm, the entire Belgian airspace will be closed for an undetermined period of time because of an ash cloud resulting from the volcanic eruption in Iceland and that will be flying over Belgium.

This means that IFR flights (Instruments Flight Rules), landings and take-offs will no longer be authorized in the Belgian airspace. You can get more information on the flights from or to Belgium with the airport operators.

Belgocontrol ensures the safety of air navigation in the Belgian airspace. Belgocontrol experts decided this Thursday morning that the safety conditions for air navigation in Belgium would no longer be met as from this Thursday afternoon. Besides the visibility matter, ashes can indeed damage the aircraft engines. Belgocontrol informed the State Secretary for Mobility, Etienne Schouppe, about this. He decided to close the northwest part of the Belgian airspace as from 2.30 pm and the entire airspace as from 4.30 pm. The decision to reopen the airspace will be taken by the State Secretary as soon as the safety conditions will be met again. Till further notice the airspace will be closed for IFR flights until Friday 16 April, 4.00 pm. This measure might be prolonged.

VFR operators should exercise extreme caution and must assure themselves that their intended flight can be conducted in a safe manner before flying.
