ATA comments on DOT airline passenger-protection rulemaking
02-Jun-2010 The Air Transport Association of America (ATA), the trade organization for the leading U.S. airlines, today issued the following statement regarding the passenger-protection notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) issued by the Department of Transportation (DOT):
"The ATA member airlines' shared goal is to provide a safe, efficient, reliable and economically viable air transportation system consistent with the expectations of their customers, employees and shareholders. Today's DOT notice of proposed rulemaking will be evaluated against that standard, with a focus on minimizing potential passenger inconvenience," said ATA President and CEO James C. May.
Annually, commercial aviation helps drive more than $1 trillion in U.S. economic activity and nearly 11 million U.S. jobs. On a daily basis, U.S. airlines operate nearly 25,000 flights in 80 countries, using more than 6,000 aircraft to carry an average of two million passengers and 50,000 tons of cargo.
