26-Aug-2010 As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), during the first six months of 2010, a total of 43.3 million passengers travelled from German airports which marks an increase of 1.7% from the corresponding period of the previous year.

In the first quarter of this year a growth-rate of 4.8% was observed. Due to the repercussions of the volcanic eruption in April the offer of services was interrupted for more than a week which caused a plunge of 18.4%. May and June 2010 showed a recovery (+7.7% and +6.8%) but the level of positive results of the first quarter could not be maintained in the second one (-0.8%).

Traffic within Germany (11.4 million passengers) showed a minus of 1.2%, volumes to European destinations (24.2 million) grew by 1.5% traffic to other continents (7.6 million) by 7.0%.

Different from passenger traffic the segment of air-freight including air-mail (1.93 million tons in the first half of 2010) was characterized by double digit growth rates between 18.1% and 34.4% for the month from January until June 2010. The volume of these transhipments (loaded and unloaded goods) exceeded the result of the first half 2009 by more than a fourth (+27.8%).

The exchange of goods with foreign countries amounted to 1.88 million tons (+29.8%). The growth mainly stems from an increased demand of services in connection with states in Asia (+39.9%) and America (+37.3%).
