Brussels Airport reports Aug-2010 traffic data

Passengers

In August Brussels Airport handled 1.8 million passengers, up 2.4% on the same month last year. Transfer traffic and especially long-haul traffic (+18%) did very well. In the intra-European segment business traffic in particular is on the up whereas leisure traffic is under more pressure from competing airports.

Cargo

Although the summer holidays are far from being a peak period for cargo traffic the cargo segment grew by 7.3% compared to August 2009. This growth is mainly accounted for by the volume of cargo carried on board of passenger aircraft. Integrator traffic too records positive growth for the first time since the start of the crisis.

Aircraft movements

The number of aircraft movements continues to record small negative growth (-0.6%). The number of flights totalled to 149,341 in August.

New services

In November Air Arabia will move its operations to Fez, Oujda and Casablanca from Charleroi to Brussels Airport. Ukraine International reopens its route to Kiev as of September and Brussels Airlines announces an additional weekly flight to Nairobi and Kigali. As of 2011 SkyWork Airlines start operating services to Bern and Angers, a new direct destination for Brussels Airport.

Although Icelandair does not operate from Brussels Airport in the winter they decided to double their frequency on the Brussels - Reykjavik route as of next summer.
