The time has come! Today marks the start of building work in the Airport City - right in front of the BBI Terminal - and yet another key milestone for Berlin Airports on the way to realising the new Capital Airport, which is scheduled to commence flight operations on 3 June 2012.

Over the next few months, an urbane new service complex is to be built on an area spanning 16 hectares. Seven buildings will be built here in time for the opening of BBI: four multi-storey car parks, a car hire centre, a 4-star hotel and an office and service complex.

"The construction of the new Capital Airport and the development of the core business are coming along in leaps and bounds. Once again this year, Berlin Airports has grown above the national average. We will end 2010 with a new record of over 22 million passengers, despite the ash cloud, numerous strikes and a harsh winter", said Prof. Dr. Schwarz, CEO of Berlin Airports. "By offering new long-haul flights operated by Air Berlin to New York, Miami, Dubai and Mombasa, we have already laid the foundations for establishing BBI as a new East-West hub."

Holger Würk, Managing Director of DAL Bautec Baumanagement und Beratung GmbH: "The realisation of these third-party investments truly underlines the economic importance of the airport. Otherwise, it would not have been possible for us, as an investor, to sell the idea of this project to financing partners within the space of a few weeks. A project that considerably relies on the properties to be developed and the achievable cash flows as collateral rather than the equity capital provided by the airport or its shareholders, state guarantees or other additional securities. This is something we, and the financing banks, do only if we believe in the project and its economic importance."

Dr. Manfred A. Körtgen, COO of Berlin Airports: "We are building the Airport City together with our partners. Right at the heart of the new airport, an urbane new service complex will be built in time for the opening of BBI. We have designed the Airport City in line with the airport's concept of having everything within a short distance. The fact that Deutsche Anlagen-Leasing has invested €240 million in this project highlights the appeal of BBI as a business location. Further investors are more than welcome."

Deutsche Anlagen-Leasing will build four multi-storey car parks offering space for around 10,000 cars and a car hire centre in the Airport City. DAL will also develop other operational buildings at BBI, bringing the total sum invested to €240 million.

Project developer ECE Projektmanagement will work together with the Steigenberger Group to develop a 4-star superior Steinberger Hotel with an adjoining conference area spanning approximately 4,300 square metres.

Fay Projects GmbH will build the first office and service complex comprising a six-storey office building with 24,000 square metres of office space in the immediate vicinity.

The BBI Airport City will be located directly in front of the terminal of the new BBI Airport. This urbane new service complex is being developed on a 16-hectare plot. Investors will be able to choose from a number of variable plots aligned along a central plaza and will be asked to develop buildings with five or six storeys. Altogether, up to 148,000 m² of gross floor area can be created here. The outstanding, exceptionally convenient location and the excellent connecting infrastructure put the new BBI Airport City firmly in the top category of new development opportunities.
