04-Mar-2011 On 1 March, 2011, Mikhail Vasilenko, General Director of Sheremetyevo International Airport, gave his annual press conference on operational and financial results of 2010 and the airport’s development plans.

In 2010, Sheremetyevo became one of Europe's leaders in the quality of passenger service according to ACI Europe. At the end of the last year's 4th quarter, Sheremetyevo was number three in the group of European airports with a passenger traffic of 15 to 25 million.

The company managed to achieve this high result by implementing new passenger services, raising the efficiency of the airport's basic processes and building up the "global influence factors", which according to ACI include in particular the general impression of an airport, cleanliness of areas and politeness of personnel. In particular, passengers were offered airfield transfer, free Wi-Fi and 3G communication, Russia's first capsular hotel was put into operation (Aeroexpress terminal), and a unified taxi dispatch service was launched. Due to the installation of information stands with sensor displays, self-registration desks in the airport and Belorussky railway station and the offer to foreign nationals to pay for Russian visas using ATMs in the "sterile" area, the process of completing formalities before and after flight has been substantially facilitated and the convenience of using airport services has grown.

Mikhail Vasilenko mentioned that in 2010 Sheremetyevo's passenger traffic reached the record level of 19 million 329 thousand, which is 31% more than in 2009. This figure is also Europe's best and the world's number two among airports with a passenger traffic over 15 million people according to the ACI Europe report. The airport's cargo traffic totaled 251 thousand tons.

The robust passenger traffic growth became possible due to the beginning of the full-scale operation in Sheremetyevo of Eastern Europe's largest Southern Air Terminal Complex including terminals D, E and F and Aeroexpress railway terminal. The complex covers a total area of more than 400 thousand sq.m having a capacity of 25 million passengers annually.

In April 2010 Sheremetyevo opened the cutting-edge Terminal E of the total area of 76 thousand sq.m with a capacity of 7 million passengers annually. Terminal E corresponds to international standards in terms of passenger and airline service quality, creating as favorable conditions for carriers and tour operators as possible.

Sheremetyevo pays special attention to premium class passenger service. Last year, the construction of Terminal A was commenced, which is intended for offering a full selection of business aviation services. Construction of the new terminal will be completed in August 2011.

Successful cooperation with airlines continues and new contracts with air carriers are being made. The most popular airlines whose services our passengers used in 2010 include Aeroflot, Avianova, Nordavia, Donavia, Transaero, Nord Wind, Aerosvit, Air France, Turkish Airlines and CSA (Czech Airlines). 10 new carriers started their flights from Sheremetyevo in 2010, including Avianova, China Eastern, China Southern, Windrose, Donbassaero, Hong Kong Airlines, Orenburg Airlines and the cargo carriers Martinair, TNT Airways and Polyot.

The dynamic development of infrastructure and the commissioning of additional terminal facilities further the development of the Sheremetyevo International Airport as a leading air hub of Russia and Eastern Europe.

The successful operation figures have made possible a record growth of financial figures. Sheremetyevo's RAS proceeds in 2010 reached 8 billion 565 million rubles, which is 83.1% higher than in 2005, while income from non-aviation business grew 2.6 times up to 3 billion 417 million rubles. The outrunning pace of income growth in the non-aviation business attests to a higher efficiency of using commercial areas and new big opportunities for business partners.

The Sheremetyevo management continues to see a top priority in securing a high level of aviation safety. For this purpose, the airport uses an integrated video supervision system, access control, complete examination at checkpoints and terminal entrances, patrolling of the area with dogs, supervision of cargo during handling and guarding of the perimeter, aircraft and internal area.

The airport applies state-of-the-art security systems; entrances and checkpoints are equipped with metal detectors and introscopes, milliwave scanners and new-generation gas analyzers are used. A three-level system of 100% automatic luggage examination and a video supervision system which automatically identifies potentially hazardous objects according to given parameters have been installed. Application of the innovative three-dimensional biometric access control identifying a person on the basis of an analysis of 40,000 face points has been started at Broadway 3D checkpoint.

Environment and health protection is a major priority in Sheremetyevo. Rospotrebnadzor has approved Russia's first health protection zone of the airport, covering an area of 11.2 sq.km. Physical effects and air condition are regularly gauged in the zone to secure environment protection. The schedule of flights is being optimized and the aircraft fleet is being upgraded to minimize noise effect. Municipal authorities are required to align their development plans with Sheremetyevo's health protection zones and clear zones.

Sheremetyevo consistently pays attention to comfortable working conditions for its employees. More than 141 million rubles has been assigned under the social responsibility program to pay benefits and compensations including some 30 million rubles under a program of resort treatment and vacations for employees and their children. More than 5 thousand employees have been trained in the Sheremetyevo Corporate University (81% of the entire personnel); the Young Specialists' Club was opened in 2009. Since 2009 Sheremetyevo applies a system of innovation implementation, which in the last year launched 8 innovative projects initiated by the airport's employees.

The best proof of the company's efficiency is the opinion of its customers. In 2010 Sheremetyevo launched the Secret Passenger program, in which 177 people took part; 700 questionnaires have been processed. Over the period while the program has been in effect, appraisal given by air travelers to the airport's personnel and service level grew 30% on the average.

In 2012 Sheremetyevo is planning to start the construction of a third runway and develop the second flight zone. The airport is consistently progressing towards its strategic goal, to become by 2015 Europe's best hub airport in terms of passenger service quality, raise its capacity and achieve an income level of 60% in the non-aviation business.
