Avinor: Traffic situation normal in Norway

Direct News Source

25-May-2011 With only low ash concentrations in some areas of Norwegian airspace, normal air traffic is expected for Norway until the morning of Thursday 26 May.

Ash eruptions from the volcano on Iceland are reported to have ceased. Forecasts indicate that an area with low ash concentrations in the North Sea and over southern Norway is moving in a south-eastern direction and decreasing in size. An ash cloud west of Nordland is continuing towards the south-east over the mainland while also becoming somewhat smaller.

The forecast further indicates that the area of high ash concentration at Svalbard will move south and become smaller and lose altitude in the course of the next 12 hours. Medium and low ash concentrations will remain in the area.

It is the responsibility of the airlines to have the required permits from the Norwegian Civil Aviation Authority to fly in areas with volcanic ash.

Avinor bases its forecasts on a comprehensive assessment of the information available from ash charts from the Met Office and forecasts and analyses from Met.no and NILU - the Norwegian Institute for Air Research.

It is the Bodø control centre that heads Avinor's operative work.

Unless the forecasts change during the evening of 25 May, the next bulletin at Avinor.no will be published in the morning of Thursday 26 May.

Passengers are requested to obtain up-to-date information from their airlines and travel agents.
