LAN plans to invest USD1.8 billion on acquiring 23 new aircraft in 2012. This is a doubling of expenditure from 2011's amount of USD841 million. The carrier also stated it expects passenger capacity (ASK) growth of between 12% and 14% in 2012, which will be largely driven by the net delivery of 13 passenger aircraft. LAN Cargo expects cargo ATK growth between 7% and 9% in 2012, due to the scheduled delivery of two Boeing 777Fs during 2H2012. [more – original PR] [more – original PR]

13-Mar-2012Consolidation in the US regional airline industry has failed to mirror the success achieved by the country’s network carriers after the latest round of mergers were completed between Delta-Northwest and United-Continental. The tie-ups in the regional sector have only intensified cost pressures at the consolidating carriers, which have left them searching for a viable long-term business model. In the short term, some of those airlines are attempting to work with their major partners to ease the cost inflation, but it is far from certain if legacy airlines intend to show any sympathy to their feeder partners.
The two largest US regional operators, SkyWest and Republic Airways Holdings, bled a combined USD150 million in losses in 2011 as they endured pain from their attempts to stabilise their business in an uncertain regional marketplace. SkyWest faced a reality check in meeting financial milestones it aimed to achieve through its acquisition of ExpressJet while Republic spent the majority of 2011 wringing USD120 million of costs from its low-cost subsidiary Frontier Airlines. Pinnacle Airlines, in the midst of its own internal restructuring, has pushed back the release of its 2011 financial results.

Qantas in a changing world: quantifies refocused international strategy and limits capital exposure
14-May-2012Qantas' withdrawal from a series of international routes promises the single largest benefit to its loss-making international division, delivering AUD100-120 million (USD101-122 million) in annual benefits, with the majority to be realised in FY2013. But with the international division reporting a loss of AUD216 million (USD219 million) in FY2012, Qantas will continue to operate a number of unprofitable routes, primarily to Europe and Asia.
Qantas expects to reduce those losses through the reconfiguration of its Boeing 747-400 and A380 fleets, which when complete towards the second half of FY2014 will deliver AUD70-90 million (USD71-91 million) of benefits annually. Qantas previously put those retrofit changes at a cost of AUD400 million (USD406 million). They include reconfiguring nine 747-400s to have no first class while 12 A380s have a reduced number of business class seats but more economy and premium economy seats.
