Lufthansa Group reports (09-Dec-2011) the following traffic highlights in Nov-2011:

• Passenger numbers: 8.2 million, +4.6% year-on-year;
  • Lufthansa Passenger Airlines: 5.2 million, +6.4%;
  • SWISS: 1.2 million, +3.7%;
  • Austrian Airlines: 843,000, +4.9%;
  • bmi: 397,000, -10.3%;
  • Germanwings: 496,000, +1.5%;
• Passenger load factor: 73.7%, -2.0 ppts;
  • Lufthansa Passenger Airlines: 73.8%, -2.1 ppts;
  • SWISS: 78%, -1.4 ppts;
  • Austrian Airlines: 69.8%, -3.0 ppts;
  • bmi: 63.6%, -4.5 ppts;

Lufthansa Group: “Sales for the Passenger Airline Group rose year on year by 3.4 per cent in November. As capacity growth (+6.2%) was reduced again, the load factor for the first month of the winter flight plan stabilised at 73.7 per cent.   Austrian Airlines is facing a testing period after posting operating losses of well over EUR100 million (USD129 million) over the past two years.   Airlines and airports are feeling the impact of the current global economic weakness and declining consumer spending in Europe, which is having a noticeable impact on air cargo volumes. Cargo traffic, which generated USD66 billion in revenue in 2010, has declined every month since May-2011, according to IATA upon the release of its Oct-2011 traffic results, with a 4.7% year-on-year reduction in cargo demand in Oct-2011 amid reduced manufacturing confidence and businesses switching to slower modes of transport.

  “Cargo is the story of the month. Since mid-year the market has shrunk by almost 5% and this is far greater than the 1% fall in world trade. Air freight is among the first sectors to suffer when businesses confidence declines,” IATA director general and CEO Tony Tyler said. Meanwhile, Boeing CEO Jim McNerney separately stated the company has seen a softening of freight demand in recent months, describing the freight market as a “watch item”.
