Qatar Airways acquires 35% stake in Cargolux

Cargolux International Airlines closed a deal with Qatar Airways on 09-Sep-2011 for the acquisition of a 35% stake in the cargo carrier, according to an Arabian Business report. Cargolux's shareholder structure is now as follows:

• Luxair: 43.4%
• Qatar Airways: 35.0%
• Banque et Caisse d’Eppargne de l’Etat: 10.9%
• Société Nationale de CCrédit et d’Investissement: 10.7%

  The business environment for air cargo has continued to weaken in 4Q2011, with IATA in its 4Q2011 Cargo E-Chartbook labelling the outlook for freight profitability as “pessimistic” and the revenue outlook as “weak”. This has occurred amid declining cargo rates, which has placed downward pressure on yields and revenues, while costs have remained high, despite some recent relief from declining jet fuel prices in Dec-2011 and reduced labour costs.

  Reflecting pressures in the cargo market, Jade Cargo International on 31-Dec-2011 announced the temporary suspension of its services "due to overall weak air cargo demand". The carrier added the suspension of service will "provide the shareholders with an opportunity to coordinate with stakeholders to continue with the restructuring of the company’s financial structure". As a result of the suspension, the carrier's six Boeing 747-400ERFs aircraft have temporarily been grounded. According to reports in Boersen Zeitung, Jade Cargo no longer has the funds to purchase fuel for its six 747 aircraft. Lufthansa Cargo stated the company "believes in the future" of Jade and "hopes to find a solution in the next few weeks".

  China’s air transport industry has entered a stage of slower growth, registering single-digit total air traffic (RTKs, including passenger and cargo traffic) of growth in 2011 according to CAAC. China’s aviation industry experienced double-digit traffic growth from 2004 through 2010, according to CAAC, with 2010 clearly a banner year of recovery for China, after the downturn in 2008/09. 2011's volumes have been well below expectation, particularly since the middle of the year.

  In the wider Asia Pacific region, the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) has noted that Asian carriers are bracing themselves for another tough year in 2012 as the outlook is impacted by the “unresolved concerns about the Eurozone debt crisis and wider uncertainty about the global economic outlook for 2012”. However, the association noted the region’s airlines are faring better than airlines in other regions and that they are still “relatively well placed” to benefit from future growth opportunities.
